Bovine Growth Hormone. Recombinant bovine somatotropin, rBST (also referred to as bovine growth hormone), is a genetically engineered hormone injected into dairy cows to increase milk yield.158 In the 2005-2006 survey of 113 dairies in 5 U.S. states, 71.7% used rBST,159 and of U.S. dairy operations with 500 or more cows, 42% use rBST.
